Be recognised as a Mental Health First Aid Skilled Workplace

In 2015, Mental Health First Aid Australia launched the Mental Health First Aid Skilled Workplaces Initiative to recognise and reward the many workplaces across Australia that are doing wonderful work in increasing mental health literacy by rolling out MHFA Courses for employees. In 2016, the Skilled Workplaces Initiative has been re-structured to make it more accessible to and inclusive of workplaces of varying sizes.

Note that employees trained as accredited Mental Health First Aiders are eligible to be as appointed as Mental Health First Aid Officers in the workplace.

Workplaces can apply for recognition under the initiative, which has three categories (based on a workplace’s size), each with three tiers:

Requirements and Levels of Recognition

To be eligible to apply for recognition, your workplace must maintain a certain percentage of staff with a current MHFA certificate (one that has been issued within the last 3 years from date of application). The percentage varies according to the workplace size.

Workplace Size Percentage Trained
  Bronze Silver Gold
Small (2 - 50 staff)  10% 20% 40%
Medium (51 - 500 staff) 5% 10% 20%
Large (501+ staff) 2.5% 5% 10%

Applications are only accepted from an employee of the applying workplace.

For a workplace to be eligible to apply, they need to be an Australian incorporated legal entity, with operations based in Australia. This includes consortiums, individual worksites of multi-site organisations and individual workplace departments.
Unfortunately, sole traders are not eligible to apply.

How are MHFA Skilled Workplaces Recognised?

Applications that are assessed as meeting the above requirements will be acknowledged in the following ways for 12 months (the three tiers are all recognised in the same ways for all three of the Small, Medium and Large categories):

  • Workplace logo displayed on the home-page and workplace name displayed on the MHFA Skilled Workplace webpage of the MHFA Australia website
