Maria Russell, instructor profile

As a Mental Health First Aid Youth Instructor, brings eight years’ experience as a Primary School teacher – including a deep understanding of the educational and emotional needs of children.

In her previous teaching position, Maria was the Wellbeing Coordinator and facilitator of the school’s Be You program. While coordinating the program, Maria also trained as a Visiting Therapy Dog Handler, and now works with her therapy dog Winnie to support young people with disability and additional needs.

Maria’s early education expertise and passion for working with young people is enriched by her background in the private sector. Before becoming an educator, Maria worked in call centre management, sales, marketing and recruitment.

In these broader roles, Maria developed a deep understanding of workplace mental health needs while expanding her abilities to think critically, solve problems and make decisions under pressure. She also honed her natural abilities of empathy, tact and creating rapport with a range of people while developing exemplary interpersonal, listening and communication skills – all attributes essential to providing effective mental health support.
