Geoff Ahern is a Master MHFA Instructor and Senior Mental Health Clinician with extensive experience in Emergency and Trauma nursing, Rural Nursing, Drug and Alcohol Counselling and Psychiatric nursing, having worked in both the public and private sectors. As an educator Geoff has been involved in one to one mentoring and staff inservices right through to full-time lecturing at a tertiary level. Geoff works as a freelance educator with Monash University and runs the MHFA courses for private companies, charity groups, schools, churches and not for profits groups. As well as running the MHFA courses Geoff works with Victorian Police in Melbourne on a pilot project where he goes out with police on the road to attend jobs that police are called to that involve a person's mental health. Rather than the client being taken to the ED, sometimes against their will, Geoff assesses them with the police wherever they might be, at home, at a train station, at work etc. This approach reduces the stress on the client and if by chance they need admission to hospital, this can be facilitated direct to the mental health unit avoiding busy, noisy and chaotic emergency departments. Geoff is a passionate and creative intructor, bringing to his classes stories and experiences that give life and meaning to the subject areas that are taught in this course. Don't expect a boring two days of theory, expect to have fun, be entertained, and know that you'll walk away feeling positive and optimistic about helping others with mental health problems (there's a pretty good chance you'll feel better about your own mental health too). Geoff holds a Masters Degree in Mental and has his own website ( and is on FaceBook ( so feel free to have a sticky beak. Geoff also puts out a weekly email newsletter called, "Mindful Musings" so pop over to his website if you'd like to subscribe :)
