Geoffrey Ahern is a Master MHFA Instructor and Senior Mental Health Clinician with extensive experience in Emergency and Trauma nursing, Rural Nursing, Alcohol and Other Drug Counselling and Psychiatric nursing, having worked in both the public and private sectors.
As an educator Geoff has been involved in one to one mentoring and staff inservices right through to full-time lecturing at a tertiary level. Geoff works as a freelance educator with Monash University and runs the MHFA courses for private companies, charity groups, schools, churches and not for profits groups.
As well as running the MHFA courses Geoff works part-time as a Mental Health Crisis Assessment Clinician in Emergency Departments in Melbourne, assessing and assisting people who present to ED in crisis. Prior to this Geoff spent 5 years working with Victorian Police on a mental health crisis response team, attending triple zero calls that involve mental health emergencies with police.
Geoff is a passionate and creative intructor, bringing to his classes stories and experiences that give life and meaning to the subject areas that are taught in this course. Don't expect a boring two days of theory, expect to have fun, be entertained, and know that you'll walk away feeling positive and optimistic about helping others with mental health problems (there's a pretty good chance you'll feel better about your own mental health too).
Geoff holds a Masters Degree in Health Science (Mental Health and Addiction) and has his own website (www.geoffreyahern.com) and is on FaceBook (www.facebook.com/geoffreyahern) so feel free to have a sticky beak. Geoff also puts out a weekly email newsletter called, "Mindful Musings" so pop over to his website if you'd like to subscribe :)
