I am currently a Senior Firefighter & Employee Support Coordinator for the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service (SAMFS). I am a Senior Peer and Station Peer within SAMFS and actively promote mental health awareness, stigma reduction and education. I was honoured to receive an AFSM as part of the 2020 Australia Day Honours on January 26 for my work providing support to others and my ongoing commitment to mental heath management and support.
Prior to my time with the SAMFS (2008-current), I was a police officer with the South Australia Police (1995 – 2009) and have seen first-hand, the effects of trauma and mental health decline in emergency service workers and society in general. As such, I am a big advocate for modern, practical and peer led initiatives that result in progressive change in prevention and care as well as education in this most important area.
Some of my more relevant qualifications include: Mental Health First Aid instructor (Mental Health First Aid Australia), DiSC Personality Profiler (Integro Learning Co.), Workplace Trainer and Assessor (Cert IV), Policing (Advanced Diploma), Public Safety – Firefighting Supervision (Diploma), Leadership and Management (Diploma), Work Health and Safety (Diploma), Government (Diploma), Community Services (Diploma) and Business Administration (Diploma), Counselling (Diploma) and Mental Health (Diploma).
I possess a genuine interest in the well-being of others and believe that my experiences as outlined above, coupled with drive, commitment and sound communication skills assist me in my role as a Mental Health First Aid instructor.
