Location Information

My name is Steve McMurtry. I am a registered nurse who registered under the hospital training system in 1979 as a Psychiatric Nurse. I trained at Rydalmere Hospital in Sydney. After working in the mental health field for a time I went on to train as a mental retardation nurse, also at Rydalmere Hospital. It was while working in this field that I gained my first qualification as a preceptor (1981) for trainee nursing staff. I have been committed to encouraging and developing staff since this time. I have worked in a variety of sectors in mental health, I was one of the founding staff members at the CADE Unit in Wingham; The Older Persons Mental Health Nurse here on the mid north coast for 17 years, The Clinical Nurse Consultant for Dementia Care within the aged care service based in Taree; I helped set up the dementia unit in one of our aged care facilities; Clinical Nurse Specialist in Mental Health at the Mayo Private Hospital Taree; I have enjoyed teaching the mental health component of the Enrolled Nurse course at Tafe since 2008. I am now very pleased to join Valley Industries to provide education and support to staff and carers about mental health in the context of disability support. I have just looked back on what I have written and this is not me at all. This sounds like a resume. I really only wanted to introduce myself, I am Steve, my lovely wife and I moved our family to the best kept secret in NSW in 1990 and have been involved in the delivery of mental health services since then. I hope I will see many of you around the various Valley Industries sites. Most of all I hope that together we can make a positive difference to the mental health of everyone at Valley Industries.
